The Director of the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences appointed Dr. Daniele Margarone as the Director of Research and Operations of ELI Beamlines as of 1 September 2022. The selection was based on the recommendation of an international search committee set up for this purpose.
Dr. Margarone has recently served as a lecturer in experimental plasma physics at Queen’s University in Belfast, UK and Head of the Department of “Ion acceleration and application of high energy particles” at ELI Beamlines. He joined ELI Beamlines in 2010 and has contributed significantly to the development of ELI Beamlines from the preparatory phase through the implementation and commissioning of technologies, in particular the ion accelerator called ELIMAIA. Dr. Margarone is a recognized scientist in the field of plasma physics and particle acceleration with extensive experience from experiments using high-power lasers.
Dr. Margarone will succeed Dr. Georg Korn, who has been in the position since 2014 and who is among the key personalities who have made the success of the last decade related to ELI Beamlines possible. “Dr. Korn has provided an extraordinary service to ELI Beamlines and the pan-European Extreme Light Infrastructure project especially with regard to establishing a very competent experimental team, developing and delivering key scientific instrumentation and shaping the scientific strategy for ELI Beamlines “, says Roman Hvezda, Director of the ELI Beamlines Facility.
Dr. Margarone’s main challenge will be to create an effective user programme and coordinate research activities at ELI Beamlines as well as to promote scientific opportunities for the community in collaboration with the Director of Science of ELI ERIC. “I have been involved in shaping the ELI Beamlines project from its inception“, says Daniele. “It is an honor to serve in this new role and to facilitate a rapid transition to a truly international user facility delivering excellent science.”
