LEAK workshop conclusions

The response of the scientific community has been excelent. In fact, besides the local community, 12 international scientists and 3 high power femtosecond laser manufacturing companies came to ELI-Beamlines in order to show their most recent achievements.

After the introductory speech by the Scientific Director Georg Korn (ELI Beamlines), in the first workshop session, the groups of LOA (France), University of Maryland (USA) and Oxford University (UK) have presented their techniques to produce electron beams with kHz laser systems. This session was concluded by the theoretical overview presented by Prof. Sergei Bulanov (ELI Beamlines).

The second session was about potential applications of kHz electron beams. Two main applications have been identified: ultrafast electron diffraction, presented by the groups of Uppsala University (Sweden) and University of Potsdam (Germany), and ultrafast radiation chemistry, presented by the group of University of Paris-Sud (France). Dr. Frederic Vellieux from our neighboring Biocev has presented their center of molecular structure. Finally, Technical challenges about the electron beam transport have been addressed by the group of Soleil Synchrotron (France).

In the third session, the kHz laser technology that could be used as a driver for the electron accelerator has been reviewed. There have been contributions by Dr. Pavel Bakule (ELI Beamlines), the groups of LOA (France), FSU Jena (Germany), LMU (Germany), and the companies TRUMPF Scientific Lasers (Germany), Active Fiber Systems (Germany) and Light Conversion (Lithuania).

The workshop has been very active, and several innovative ideas arose during the meeting. For this reason, at the final round table session, the workshop participants agreed on preparing a review document about the state of the art, which will be the first step towards the realization of a device for industrial and medical purposes.”
